The fortification stretches across the peninsula, from one side to the other. Constructed to help protect local people during a period of Ottoman incursions, it remains the village’s defining historic landmark.

According to the local tourist board, the wall was supported by the Venetian doge Agostino Barbarigo. Its surviving masonry speaks of a time when a quiet summer bay was part of a much less peaceful Mediterranean.
